Brown, Defense Expecting Another Challenge fom the Georgia Tech Offense

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville defense knows it has the ability to be a solid defense, and it was on display in the 23-20 loss at Pittsburgh on Sept. 26.
After a disappointing performance in defeat to Miami, the Cardinals had to look in the mirror to correct their mistakes, and be the defense that defensive coordinator Bryan Brown expects.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals' defensive unit kept the team in the game while the offensive tried to find itself against a tough Panther defense.
"I thought we made some dramatic improvements on defense," Brown said. "I thought we tackled well and eliminated the big plays, but still have areas that we need to get better."
The Cardinals allowed 23 points and 376 yards of total offense in the loss, but spent most of the game in Pitt's backfield, recording a season high 11 tackles for loss.
After three games, the Cardinals are eighth in the nation in tackles for loss with 9.0 per game, with linebacker Dorian Etheridge leading the way with an average of 2.83 per game.
"I've been doing a good job of getting in the backfield and trying to cause a little havoc," Etheridge said. "It's just a mindset that we have defensively to try and get the opponent behind the chains."
After facing a drop-back quarterback versus Pitt, the Cardinals will face another dynamic quarterback on Friday night in Jeff Sims, who has thrown for 695 yards through the air and 187 yards on the ground.
"He's a he's a young freshman that they has made some mistakes here and there, but I tell you when he pulls that ball down and runs it, he's dangerous. "You know he kind of reminds me D'Eric King from from Miami. But I think he's faster. He's very dynamic so you got to do some things and make sure that your pass rush lanes are not past the quarterback. "
The Cardinals are looking to try to snap a two-game losing streak after losses to Miami and Pitt to open the conference slate.
"We are just trying to take it one game at a time," Etheridge said. "Every game is important and we know that we have dropped the first two league games. This is an important game because it's the next one, but we have to get a win in the ACC."
Despite the loss to Miami, where the Cardinals gave up a number of explosive plays, the Cardinals have played pretty well through the first three contests. The Cardinals enter the contest ranked 25th in the country in total defense and 38th against the run.
"We know we have areas that we need to improve on, but I liked the week of practice we had. We know this is a big game and the challenge ahead of us against a good Georgia Tech squad."
