Student-Athletes Compete in Cardinal Cook-Off Challenge

Student-Athletes from men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball faced off in a cooking battle.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Last week, 15 incoming student-athletes from men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball put their cooking skills to the test when they went head-to-head to see who could make the best dish. Â
Â
Four teams competed in a cooking challenge with the winner from each round moving on to compete in the finals.
Â
In the final round, student-athletes were given a mystery box and had to come up with their own recipes, cook and plate the meal, and then were evaluated by four judges. The meals were assessed on presentation, originality, taste and nutritional value.
Â
Teams got very creative with their meal choices as the competition progressed and a team of women's basketball and volleyball student-athletes took home first prize.
Â
"As the competition continued, they got more into it and tried more things," said sophomore volleyball student-athlete Aiko Jones, one of the judges. "They started off with basic ideas, but they developed as time went on and added more. They seemed like they all had fun, so it was pretty cool to watch".
Â
"It was tough, but we came together as a team and thought about what we liked to eat," said men's basketball student-athlete Aidan Igiehon. "We were feeling the pressure since the women already had a good start, so we decided to call Josh's (Nickelberry) mom for some help. In the end, we were proud of the meal we created."
Â
The Sports Nutrition staff at UofL prides itself on educating student-athletes about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and provides the proper foods necessary for maximum performance.
Â
Becky Lindberg, a sports dietitian at UofL, was happy with the event, "The Cardinal Cook-Off Challenge was an excellent opportunity to have our student-athletes gain confidence in the kitchen and learn more about having a food-first approach to their nutrition needs. As sports dietitians, we want our student-athletes to feel empowered in the kitchen."
Â
This marked the first time that University of Louisville student-athletes have joined together in a cook-off challenge.
