On April 17, 2019, six University of Louisville athletes were recognized as the ACC Top Six in Service Award. Emily Corso, Maddie Luette, Gaby Vincent, Perie Howard, Hollyn Barr and Margaret Geraghty received this honor which is given at each ACC institution to student-athletes who are dedicated to serving others and have shown a passion for enriching the lives of others. These recipients demonstrated exceptional service by the number of hours they have volunteered with various charities and service organizations throughout the past year.
Corso, a sophomore on the rowing team, has been an active volunteer at the Cincinnati Museum Center as a KidSPACE intern for the past year. KidsSPACE is a program that encourages STEM education for children. Emily is passionate about working with her local community that gives her the opportunity to give back. In addition to working for CMC, she has also participated in local events such as Ironman and Out of the Darkness Walk which is a movement that closely works with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Vincent, a senior on the women's soccer team, had the opportunity to work with her church on a mission trip to Kenya. For a week, Gabby had the opportunity to work for the community. She is also an avid volunteer with the UP Louisville Homeless shelter where she spends her time helping women and children. Other organizations that Gaby has engaged with are American Health Association, Family Scholar House, and participating as a coach at both Frayser Elementary and Kentucky Fire Junior Club.
Luette, a senior on the rowing team, served as a summer intern at the Kids Center for Pediatric Therapies. KCPM is a nonprofit outpatient therapy center for children with developmental disabilities. Her passion working with children then translated this year as she became a college mentor to elementary schools. This year, Maddie has also engaged with the community by working with the Metro Parks and & Inclusive Recreation and Norton's Children Hospital.
Howard, a senior on the rowing team, worked at Camp Energy where she served as a summer counselor that promoted healthy living. During the school year, she has been a devoted volunteer with the Metro Parks Adaptive & Inclusive Recreation where she showed continuous participation at events. These events consisted of kickball and coloring that allowed her to maintain a close relationship with her Louisville community
Barr, a junior on the field hockey team, participated in local organizations whose mission is to help the Louisville homeless community and children. Hollyn has been an enthusiastic volunteer at these service organizations for the past year. In addition, she has engaged in events like Backpack for Success and Read Across America. Last summer, she used her time to be a college coach and teacher.
Geraghty, a senior on the rowing team, has spent most of her volunteer time working as a mentor and reading to children at elementary schools. When Margaret is not mentoring, she has extended a helping hand in local events such as summer camps, Ironman 5K, and helping incoming freshman with move-in. Margaret has also worked closely with Norton's Children Hospital and the Portland Promise Center.
