Tutu Atwell Looks to be the Next Great UofL Wide Receiver
October 12, 2019 | Football
The Miami, Fla., native continues to make big plays.
Over the years, the University of Louisville has been filled with talent at the wide receiver position.
Players like DeVante Parker, Deion Branch, and Harry Douglas all had outstanding careers at UofL and continued that success in the NFL.
Â
Chatarius "Tutu" Atwell, the sophomore star wideout, is anxious to continue this trend by adding his name to the list of Louisville greats.
Tutu started playing football when he was just four years old in his hometown of Miami, Fla. He was inspired to play the sport by his father,
who played football at the University of Minnesota.
"I just started watching his film and it pretty much inspired me to play," said Atwell.
Before coming to Louisville, Atwell was a big key to the offense at Northwestern High School, playing both quarterback and wide receiver.
While in high school, he looked up to former Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who also played at Northwestern.
But, unlike Bridgewater, Atwell was immediately moved to the wide receiver position when he arrived on campus.
"Last year was my first time solely playing wide receiver. But, because I have been able to solely focus on that, I feel like I'm much better than I
was when I first got here," he said.
Last season, Atwell finished the year with 24 receptions, 406 yards and two touchdowns.
But, this year, he feels as if his role has changed.
"I'm just a bigger part of the offense this season," said Atwell. "I feel like I have gotten the ball a lot more and I'm just taking it step-by-step, trying to
get better every day."
Atwell said most of his improvements have come from studying more experienced players like Seth Dawkins and Gunter Brewer, the new wide
receivers coach.
"Seth taught me how to be a leader and how to be a grown up. I look up to him like a big brother," he added. "Coach Brewer brought us together, he
really knows how to motivate us and inspire us."
With a full season under his belt as a full-time wideout, Atwell has stepped up. He leads the team with 310 yards and five touchdown catches through
four games.
He had a career day against Western Kentucky, finishing with four receptions for 141 yards and three touchdowns.
Â
On his big day against WKU, "I just want to keep doing what I am doing and my goal for this year is to keep scoring touchdowns."
After watching the first four games, the likelihood of continuously finding the end zone seems promising for Atwell.
Now it's just about taking it step-by-step and continuing to get better every single day.
