Humberg and Pahz knock of No. 7 ranked doubles pair
The University of Louisville women's tennis team knocked off a top ten doubles team but fell 5-2 to No. 26 Virginia in ACC play Friday afternoon at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
The Cardinals pair of Mariana Humberg and Abbie Pahz combined forces to upset No. 7-ranked Meghan Kelley and Rosie Johanson 6-4. The Cavs answered with a 6-4 win at No. 3 from Teodora Radosavljevic and Erica Susi over Ariana Rodriguez and Aleksandra Mally. The No. 2 pair of Sena Suswam and Raven Neely battles to a tiebreaker before falling 7-6 (3-0) to tip the point to UVa.
Â
"We had an opportunity in doubles," said Mark Beckham, UofL head coach. "I am happy for Mariana Humberg and Abbie Pahz because they have been having an unbelievable year. They just haven't had the opportunity to play these higher ranked pairs. They have played other ranked pairs and were leading but play was suspended. So today, they were able to finish it off and get their win. They are one of the best doubles team in the country I am happy for them to get the win and maybe move into the national rankings."
Â
In singles, the Cardinals scored again went Tiffany Huber won 6-4, 7-6 at No. 5 over Teodora Radosavljevic. Aleksandra Mally dropped her first set 5-7 before coming back to win the next two for UofL's other singles point. Louisville had two other matches go into three sets before falling 5-2.
Â
"I was happy for Aleksandra because she has battled back from injury and is now back in good form. She beat a really good player," said Beckham. "Virginia puts so much pressure on you because they are so offensive-minded. We are normally good at that too, but today we couldn't put enough pressure on back on them."
Â
The Cards play Virginia Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
