Louisville Downs Marquette 16-8 in Home Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bolstered by a five-goal performance by Tessa Chad, the University of Louisville women's lacrosse team sailed to a 16-9 victory over Marquette in their home-opener on Sunday afternoon at UofL Lacrosse Stadium. With the win, Louisville improves to 2-0 on the season.
"I thought we came out and we played hard," said Louisville head coach Scott Teeter. "I thought we came into our own system in the second half. The defense played great with stops down the stretch, and I thought our offense really executed our systems in the second half."
Louisville went into halftime with an 8-5 lead with goals from four different Cardinals. The Cards found themselves with their largest lead of the game, a 6-1 lead with 13:00 to go in the first half, before Marquette found some rhythm to cut the Cardinals' lead to 3.
Caroline Blalock led the first half scoring for the Cardinals, scoring a hat trick. She was followed by Jillian Balog and Chad, who each notched two goals. The trio combined for seven of the Cardinals' eight goals in the first half. Julia Wood scored the remaining goal for Louisville.
To start the second half, Wood found her second goal of the game in the opening minutes of the second half to restore the Cardinals' lead to four. After Marquette found a couple quick goals, Balog recorded the second hat trick for the Cardinals, notching her third goal in the second half to give the Cardinals a 10-7 lead.
After the fourth goal from Blalock and the third goal by Chad, Emily Howell became Louisville's fifth scorer and gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the game at six points. The lead only grew from there, with Chad notching two more goals to extend the lead to eight.
Chad led the scoring for the Cardinals, recording a season-high five goals. Blalock followed with four goals. Balog and Wood each recorded hat tricks, and Howell rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals on their way to their 16-8 win.
Lexie Ball came up big for the Cardinals, recording six saves in the second half and totaling eight for the game.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday as they host Denver at 1 p.m. at UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
