Cards top multiple ACC rivals at fall finale
EARLYSVILLE, Va. – Highlighted by a trio of top-five finishes, the University of Louisville rowing team concluded its fall season Sunday afternoon at the Rivanna Romp hosted by the University of Virginia on the Rivanna Reservoir.
In the varsity eight race, the Cardinals' V8+ boat racked up a time of 13:51.1, placing third behind a pair of Virginia boats. In the same race, the Cards' 2V8+ finished 14th with a time of 14:42.4, followed by the 3V8+ in 16th place at 14:53.8. With the result, the Cards finished ahead off of all ACC teams in the event except the hosting Cavaliers.
"This race has been a huge catalyst for our team a couple of times in recent years," said head coach Derek Copeland. "This year's results certainly show that we have an opportunity to do something special."
The Cards' second top-five finish came in the varsity four race as the V4+ finished fifth with a 15:11.6 clip. Three additional crews competed in the race, led by the 2V4+, which came in 10th place with a time of 15:11.6. Finally, the freshman eight crew was runner-up in the novice eight race at 14:34.2, followed by the novice eight boat in eighth at 16:22.1.
"Growth can be very hard and is uncomfortable. I think they've got it in them, though," said Copeland. "We have a couple of days off, and we will get back to it with our record reset to 0-0."
The Cards will now turn their attention to the winter training sessions, which concludes with a Florida training trip in February and a scrimmage meet against UCF and Tennessee in Orlando on Feb. 23. Louisville will then begin its spring regular season by hosting the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on March 16-17 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
