Schmitt scores 25th career goal and Fonseca adds first collegiate goal as Cardinals fall 3-2 to Bisons
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tate Schmitt and Pedro Fonseca each scored goals but it was not enough as the No. 10 University of Louisville men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Lipscomb on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Suffering their first home loss of the season, the Cardinals dropped to 7-3-3 overall and 5-1-2 at Lynn Stadium with Tuesday's result. The Bisons won for the fourth time in the last five matches and improved to 5-8-0 on the season.
Lipscomb opened the scoring with a goal late in the first half after John Wynia connected on a header in the 43rd minute. Logan Paynter served the ball into the box where Wynia directed it inside the left post for the 1-0 lead. It was the second goal of the season for Wynia.
Following halftime, Louisville pulled even at 1-1 in the 53rd minute on the fourth goal of the season for Schmitt. Following a short pass from Cameron Wheeler inside the box, Schmitt scored inside the far right post from six yards for his 25th collegiate goal.
The Bisons quickly answered Louisville's equalizer as Paynter pushed the road side back ahead just six minutes later. After taking a pass from Zarek Jakubowski, Paynter curled a shot inside the far left post in the 59th minute for his fifth goal of the season.
The lead for Lipscomb increased to 3-1 in the 72nd minute on the second goal of the season from Louis Robinson. Following a corner kick, the Cardinals were unable to clear the ball, which deflected off a defender to Robinson, who found the back of the net.
Louisville cut the deficit in half in the 75th minute on the first collegiate goal for Fonseca. Adam Wilson served the ball into the box, where Fonseca headed it inside the right post narrowing the margin to 3-2.
The late rally for the Cardinals included four shots over the final six minutes but none of the attempts were on frame. Louisville suffered the loss despite finishing with a 14-7 advantage in shots, including an 8-5 margin on goal.
Up next, the No. 10 Cardinals host Clemson on Saturday at 7 p.m., ET in the final regular season match of 2018 at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
