Schmitt, Wilson score goals for the Cardinals, who faced a two-goal deficit after 33 minutes
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Behind goals from Tate Schmitt and Adam Wilson, the No. 11 University of Louisville men's soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit to register a 2-2 draw with No. 24 Syracuse on a rainy Friday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The Cardinals moved to 7-2-3 on the season and 3-1-2 in the ACC with Friday's result. Louisville remained unbeaten at home taking its record at Lynn Stadium to 5-0-2 in 2018. The Cardinals also extended their unbeaten streak against the Orange (6-4-2, 1-3-1 ACC) to 10 matches overall.
Syracuse raced to a 2-0 lead on a pair of first half goals from Tajon Buchanan. The freshman forward opened the scoring in the 16th minute when he broke through the center of Louisville's backline and scored inside the far right post. Less than 18 minutes later, he doubled the lead for the visitors when he took a pass from Kamal Miller and connected on his fifth goal of the season in the 33rd minute.
Louisville started its comeback with a pivotal goal just before halftime when Schmitt connected on a header on a corner kick in the 42nd minute. Ziyad Fekri served a perfectly placed ball into the center of the box, where Schmitt directed it inside the far right post for the goal. It was the 24th career goal for Schmitt, including the third this season for the senior. The assist was the first of the season for Fekri.
Following halftime, the Cardinals found the equalizer in the 57th minute when Wilson successfully converted on a penalty kick. After the Orange was whistled for a foul inside the box, the senior scored his 12th career collegiate goal and the fourth this season to even the score at 2-2.
Both teams have multiple chances over the final 32 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of extra time but neither side could deliver the clinching goal. Despite a slow start, Louisville finished the match with a 14-9 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge on goal. The Cardinals also had a significant 8-2 margin in corner kicks.
Up next, the No. 11 Cardinals continue their four-match homestand with their final non-conference tilt of 2018 when Lipscomb visits Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium on Tuesday at 7 p.m., ET.
