Cards face UTEP and NKU on Friday and WKU on Sunday
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a doubleheader sweep last Saturday, the University of Louisville women's tennis team returns to the court this weekend for three home matchups at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
The Cardinals (2-0) open Friday's doubleheader against UTEP at 10 a.m., followed by a match against Northern Kentucky at 5 p.m. The Cards wrap up their season-opening homestand against Western Kentucky on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Â
In their home opener, the Cards posted shutout victories against Wright State and Dayton. In the morning match against the Raiders, Louisville only surrendered 12 singles games as they rode straight-sets wins to a 7-0 result. The Cards repeated the feat in the afternoon contest, sweeping the Flyers for another 7-0 win.
Â
First-year head coach Ivan Fernandez leads UTEP to Louisville as part of a road trip that takes them to WKU on Saturday. The Miners (2-0) opened their season by sweeping a doubleheader against Western New Mexico last Saturday. Freshman Erandi Martinez has made a strong debut for the Miners, posting an 11-5 record in the early portion of the season.
Â
Friday's second opponent, NKU, opens its season on Wednesday afternoon at Kentucky, before traveling to Louisville on Friday. Coach Brian Nester's young squad features four freshman and only one senior as they seek to improve upon 2017's 6-12 mark. Last season, the Cards defeated the Norse, 7-0, on March 17 at Bass-Rudd.
Â
WKU (0-1) opened its season with a tight 4-3 defeat at Alabama, tallying three singles wins against the Crimson Tide. Fourth-year head coach Jonatan Berhane earned Conference USA Coach of the Year honors last season as the Lady Toppers went 13-6 and reached the tournament semifinals. Freshman Moka Ito enters this week with a 10-4 overall record in her rookie campaign. In last season's matchup, Louisville topped WKU, 5-2, on Jan. 28 at home.
