Schmitt scores fourth goal of the season, including third in the last two matches

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Tate Schmitt delivered his fourth goal of the season as the No. 8 Louisville men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with USF on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.

Schmitt connected for his third goal in the last two matches to give the Cardinals a first half lead, but the visiting Bulls found the equalizer in the second half. With the result, Louisville extended its unbeaten streak to four matches and pushed its overall record to 6-1-2, while USF moved to 4-3-1 on the season.

A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Schmitt kicked off the scoring in the 17th minute after corralling a free kick from senior Tim Kubel and finishing inside the right post with a left-footed strike. Kubel, who registered his second assist of the season and the 21st of his collegiate career, directed the ball from the left side of the field into the center of the box where Schmitt controlled it before turning the defender with the finish. The goal was the 16th career tally for Schmitt.

Louisville carried the one-goal advantage into the second half before the Bulls evened the score on a goal from Josue Monge in the 55th minute. Ricardo Gomez started the scoring chance with a long ball to Avionne Flanagan, who was positioned near the end line. Flanagan worked up the line towards the goal before delivering a centering pass to Monge, who scored inside the right post for his first goal of the season.

Defensively, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Will Meyer made four saves, all of which came after halftime, while making his first start of the season for the home side. The Cardinals finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The teams totaled five corner kicks each in the match.

Up next, No. 8 Louisville returns to the road with a visit to ACC foe No. 12 Duke on Saturday at 7 p.m., ET and the match will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
