September 11, 2017 | Beyond the Buzzer
On August 29,2017, more than 260 University of Louisville student-athletes from 18 varsity sports were brought together in a training and competitive-free environment at 2017 Student-Athlete Social.
The second annual event was made possible by the generosity of Jim & Irene Karp. This event is part of a partnership between the Speed Art Museum and the LCare student-athlete development program. The goal is to provide cultural diversity to the student-athlete population, while engaging them in the arts.Held at the Speed Art Museum, student-athletes were given the opportunity to participate in multiple activities. Interactive exhibits, a photo booth and a silent disco were all provided by the Speed Art Museum and LCare.
Â
Women's basketball senior, Myisha Hines-Allen, commented on the event, "It (the social) was a lot of fun, I had a great time. The best part about it was the silent disco."Hines-Allen, like many other athletes throughout the night, enjoyed the dance floor at the silent disco. "To see the dance moves of other teams was pretty cool", said Hines-Allen.
Â
Savannah Thieneman, a sophomore all-girl cheerleader, had a lot to say about the venue, "I really like events like this in the museum, because most of the time people don't get to come and see art and sculptures like this, and I just think it's really cool that we get to come and just bask in the art."
Â
The program will continue its collaboration with the Speed Art Museum throughout the academic year, and with a focus on community engagement moving forward. Â
