May 11, 2017 | Rowing
All heat races and finals set for Sunday on Lake Hartwell; all events will be streamed on ACC Network Extra
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The postseason for the Louisville rowing team kicks off this weekend with the 2017 ACC Championship on Sunday at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, South Carolina.
All of the heat races and finals will be held on Sunday, with the heats starting at 8:05 a.m., ET with the First Varsity Eight. The finals will begin at 5:35 p.m., with the Second Varsity Four. All the events of the Championship will be streamed live by ACC Network Extra and can be accessed through the Watch ESPN App. Pete Yanity and Steve Pritzger will provide the play-by-play and color analysis for the broadcast.
"I am feeling hopeful that the ACC Championships will be a much better reflection of our true speed. We know that the competition is stiff, but there is some room to compete with the best of the ACC," said Louisville head coach Derek Copeland. "I wouldn't say the ACC is wide open, but there are many teams showing strong speed in different boats. We are better prepared than we have been recently and we are excited to see if it will all come together as planned."
The Cardinals are seeded second in the First Varsity Four and third in the Third Varsity Eight and the Second Varsity Four. Louisville is also fifth in the both the First and Second Varsity Eights. The heat race schedule for the Cardinals features the varsity eight crew in heat 1 at 8:05 a.m., second varsity eight in heat 1 at 8:30 a.m., varsity four in heat 2 at 9:05 a.m., second varsity four in heat 2 at 9:30 a.m., and the third varsity eight in heat 2 at 9:55 a.m. Last season, the Cardinals finished fifth overall in the nine-team championship race after finishing fourth in their inaugural season in the ACC in 2015.
"This year is different than our last two runs at the ACC championship," said senior captain Gabi Biedenharn. "We are stronger, we are tougher, we are happier and we are ready to fight for the conference title together as a tribe."
The competition at the 18th annual ACC Championship will be challenging as 11th-ranked Virginia leads the way. The Cavaliers have won 16 of the 17 ACC rowing titles and are the top seed in three of the five events. The field of teams also includes No. 13 Syracuse and No. 17 Duke, while Louisville and Notre Dame are both receiving votes in this week's CRCA poll but are outside the top 20.
"We've got something special here at Louisville and I'm excited to see how we compete against some of the best teams in the country this year," junior captain Kirsti Harrison said.
