Cardinals Finish Fifth at 2017 ACC Rowing Championship

Louisville advances all five boats to grand finals; Cardinals earn runner up finish in varsity four event
CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Louisville rowing team earned a fifth-place finish at the 2017 ACC Championship contested Sunday on Lake Hartwell. The 18th annual event featured heat races during the morning session and finals in the evening.
The Cardinals, which advanced all five boats to the grand finals, scored 62 points overall, while Virginia won the ACC title for the 17th time in 18 years after scoring 96 points. Syracuse was second with 83 points and was followed by Notre Dame (73 points), Duke (65) and Louisville to round out the top five. Clemson finished sixth overall with 49 points, while the final three spots were filled by Boston College (28), North Carolina (20) and Miami (19).
A pair of Louisville student-athletes were named to the All-ACC Rowing Team on Sunday as junior Sarah Podwojski earned first team recognition and junior Kirsti Harrison was chosen for the second team. Sunday marked the first All-ACC honor for Podwojski, while Harrison earned her second career honor after being selected as a first team rower last season.
Louisville's best finish in the five grand finals was a runner-up result in the varsity four event as the crew of Kate Allport (coxswain), Claire Bahain, Elizabeth Patrick, Erin Enk and Kaitlin Ulbert completed the course in a time of 7:08.027, while Virginia led the way at 7:04.398. The Cardinals finished just ahead of third-place Duke (7:08.585), while Syracuse was fourth (7:13.784) was fourth in the six-team final.
The Cardinals also added a pair of bronze medal finishes on Sunday finishing third in the second varsity four grand final and third in the third varsity eight grand final. Louisville's 2V4+ crew of Perie Howard (coxswain), Rebecca Yaklic, Mackenzie Garland, Rachael Schmetzer and Mallory Burnett had a time of 7:16.440, while Virginia (7:07.564) and Syracuse (7:11.707) were first and second respectively. The Cardinals' 3V8+ boat with Margaret Geraghty (coxswain), Gabi Biedenharn, Gillian Burns, Kiara Loucks, Kylie Noltemeyer, Amelia Herrera, Abigail Davies, Riley Kerber and Emma Ison finished in a time of 6:42.851 and trailed Virginia (6:35.468) and Syracuse (6:41.931).
In the final two races of the evening, Louisville finished fifth in the varsity eight grand final and sixth in the second varsity eight grand final. Virginia won the V8+ title and Syracuse was victorious in the 2V8+ grand final.
