Clemson Invitational Up Next for No. 18 Louisville Rowing
April 21, 2017 | Rowing
Two-day event on Lake Hartwell will feature heat races on Saturday and finals on Sunday
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 18 Louisville rowing team returns to action against talented field featuring some of the nation's top teams at this weekend's Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell.
This weekend's event, contested at the same venue where next month's ACC Championship will be hosted, will feature three sessions of racing across two days on Saturday (April 22) and Sunday (April 23). A field of 21 teams are slated to compete, including No. 4 Ohio State, No. 10 Virginia, No. 11 Wisconsin and No. 15 Syracuse to go along with the 18th-ranked Cardinals.
"This is always an important regatta. The Clemson Invitational will likely serve as evidence for teams to be selected for the NCAA Championships, so we really need to finish the weekend with a few key wins if we expect to be in that selection conversation come mid-May. We have known that all along and we have planned accordingly. We've made some subtle changes to our training in order to find the speed we will need during the time it matters most for NCAA selection) from Mid-April through mid-May," said Louisville head coach Derek Copeland. "I am so proud of our seniors for their ability to stay with me and continue to try different things. This is the first group I recruited as a head coach and they have seen a lot. Like last year's senior group, these ladies have continued to change with the times as we strive to do better every year. They are a great group and we all owe them a lot."
The weekend schedule at Clemson will feature two sessions of heat races on Saturday morning and afternoon, while the finals are set for Sunday morning. Fans can watch all of the racing action online at the rowing page on ClemsonTigers.com.
"We've had a really productive two weeks of training since our last race. We've been working really hard on a lot of things and everyone is excited to see how it all comes together," said senior coxswain Annie Pape. "This weekend is important and we're looking forward to competing in Clemson where the ACC Championship will take place in under a month."
In their last outing, the Cardinals earned seven race wins at the Double Dual event hosted by Indiana on April 1. Following the Clemson Invitational, Louisville will compete at the University of Michigan on April 30.
