LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Before No. 14 Louisville took the court against Virginia, the KFC Yum! Center's focus was on celebrating the careers of senior student-athletes Cortnee Walton, Taylor Johnson, and Briahanna Jackson.
Once play started, the focal point shifted to a pair of players that reinforce the Cardinals' future is quite bright.
Sophomore Asia Durr finished with a game-high 24 points, and junior Myisha Hines-Allen added 21 points and nine rebounds, and Louisville defeated Virginia 66-55 on Thursday night.
The Cardinals (24-6, 11-4 ACC) struggled early on the offensive end without Jackson and junior Mariya Moore.
One of the league's top offensive teams, Louisville's problems didn't linger for long. Freshman Jazmine Jones and Durr closed the first quarter with consecutive baskets and sparked a 13-2 run that provided the Cardinals with their first double-digit lead at 20-10.
Virginia (18-10, 7-8) outscored Louisville 17-13 in the third quarter, coming within a three-point deficit at 33-30 on a Breyana Mason jumper with 5:04 left in the period.
A layup by Hines-Allen and one of Durr's four 3-pointers provided the Cardinals with an eight-point cushion and Louisville never turned back.
The Cardinals shot 6 of 11 from the field in the final period, going 10 of 15 from the free throw line.
Durr and Hines-Allen combined for 16 rebounds as the Cardinals owned the boards, 43-24, and scored 24 second-chance points off of 17 offensive rebounds.
