Cards pick up eight wins to open the tournament

The University of Louisville men's tennis team went undefeated with eight wins on the opening day of the Louisville Fall Invitational Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Federico Gomez, George Hedley, Ciro Lampasas and Parker Wynn reached the singles quarterfinals in their respective divisions.

"We had a perfect day," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Federico and George looked better in singles and this should help their confidence. Our Texans (Parker and Ciro) looked dominating in singles. Quarterfinals and semifinals will take place tomorrow, so it will be a great day for our fans."

The Cards started the day with a pair of wins in Flight A doubles action starting with the duo of Hedley and Gomez's 8-3 win over Butler's Lope Adelakun and Adrian Mag. Wynn and Lampasas paired to beat Toledo's Danilo Vukotic and Thawin Suksathaport 8-2.

Louisville followed their doubles performance with six more wins in singles. In Flight A, Wynn opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ball State's Thibault DeNegri and defeated Chattanooga's NIklas Gerdes 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.

Lampasas picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Xavier's Alejandro Vidal and went on to beat DePaul's Alex Galoustian 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In Flight B, Hedley defeated Wright State's Javier Alvarez de la Villa 6-2, 6-0 and followed with a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Ball State's Bryce Bonin.

Gomez posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Chattanooga's Jacob Marshall in the first round and outlasted Xavier's Trent Smith 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

The tournament will continue with doubles at 9 a.m. Saturday.
