Cards win 5-2 in first match of doubleheader. WKU is up next at 4 p.m.
Louisville, Ky. -- The University of Louisville's women's tennis team took the doubles point and then won four of the six positions in singles to beat Detroit Mercy 5-2 on Saturday morning at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
"It was a nice win but throughout practice this week and in spots during the week, we had a bit of spotty play but then we have stretches of playing exactly the way we should," said Mark Beckham, UofL head coach. "We need to clean it up and stay focused and disciplined. We stray from our pattern and lose points we shouldn't and gives a little momentum to our opponents and get ourselves into a dogfight situation. We are definitely moving in the right direction. I do want us to see us play better against Western Kentucky because they are very talented this year."
Â
The Cardinals won the doubles point by sweeping all three positions. Louisville's No. 1 team of Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg defeated Anna Davydova and Ksenia Providokhina 6-1. Finishing second, Sena Suswam and Olivia Boesing topped the Titans' Marie Maitrot and Pauline Van Herck with a score of 6-3 to clinch the point. Adriana Rodriguez and Jessie Paul made it a sweep at No. 3 when they won their match against Iris Thioux and Nynke Van Goot with a final score of 6-3.
Â
Louisville carried over the momentum into the singles competition. No. 1 Anna Davydova beat the Cardinals' Sena Suswam 6-4, 6-3. Aleksandra Mally knocked off Pauline Van Herck 6-3, 6-2 at spot No. 2. At the No. 3 Mariana Humberg swept Marie Maitrot 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4 Abbie Pahz beat Iris Thioux 6-3, 7-5. At No. 5, Nynke Van Der Goot survived against Ariana Rodriguez 1-6, 6-4, 11-9. To finish out the match, at No.6 Tiffany Huber defeated Ksenia Providokhina 6-3, 6-3.
Â
The Cardinals are back in action at 4 p.m. today when intrastate rival Western Kentucky visits the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
