Cards pick up seven wins in preseason tournament
The University of Louisville men's tennis team registered seven wins to open the Florida Gulf Coast Spring Invite on Friday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Â
"The start of this tournament was challenging since our first 10 matches were against a very good South Florida team," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We were in their element with the match being outdoors, sunny and windy. We competed well, but gave up first set leads on two courst as well as third set leads two different courts. That is why USF is in the top 25. Our next five matches were against Wisconsin and we won all of them as we are starting to get acclimated. Tomorrow's schedule included playing the home team in a night match outdoors. We have not played one of these in many years so it will be a good experience for the guys."
Â
The Cardinals opened the tournament against No. 25 South Florida. UofL sophomore Brandon Lancaster (Louisville, Ky.) posted a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 singles win over USF's Vadym Kalyuzhnyy while senior Sean Donohue (Louisville, Ky.) teamed with freshman Parker Wynn (North Richland Hills, Texas) to outlast Kalyuzhnyy and Sasha Gozu 7-6 (7-3) in doubles.
Â
Louisville went on to face Wisconsin in singles and doubles, sweeping all five matches. Junior Nicolas Rouanet (Gujan Mestres, France) picked up a 6-4, 7-6 win over Daniel Soyfer. Donohue beat Darius Mackenzie 6-4 in the first set, but was edged 7-6 in the second set before prevailing with a 10-7 win in the third. Freshman Clement Filho (Paris, France)defeated Elliott Sprecher 6-1, 6-2 to complete the singles sweep.
Â
In doubles action against the Badgers, Rouanet and freshman Fredrik Moe (Moss, Norway) topped John Zordani and Soyfer 6-3 and sophomore Michael Quang (Forest Hills, Md.) paired with Filho for a 6-3 win over Elliott Sprecher and Alan Sweet.
Â
The tournament will continue on Saturday.
