Sophomore student-athletes attend workshop about warning signs of relationship abuse
The University of Louisville Athletic Department partnered with the One Love Foundation for the second year in a row to host a workshop for 80 sophomore student-athletes to raise awareness and educate students about the warning signs of relationship abuse.
The One Love Foundation was created in 2010 after the death of University of Virginia Lacrosse student-athlete, Yeardley Love. She was a victim of relationship violence and was killed by her ex-boyfriend just weeks before her college graduation.Â
One Love works with young people across the country to raise awareness about the warning signs of abuse and activate communities. The Escalation Workshop educated student-athletes on the dangers of relationship abuse and discussed both healthy and unhealthy relationships. Created by the One Love Foundation, the workshop taught UofL student-athletes to recognize warning signs and be aware of the signs of abuse. Additionally, it gave students tools to diffuse a potentially dangerous situation in a relationship.
The workshop is part of LCARE curriculum. LCARE is an all-encompassing program that enhances the collegiate experience of the student-athlete during his/her collegiate career. This comprehensive student support system serves as a link between the student-athlete and the campus-wide opportunities that student-athletes often have difficulty accessing due to athletic commitments.
Â
The workshop, which is part of the sophomore curriculum, begins with a brief introduction of what the One Love Foundation is and the goal of the Escalation Workshop. The student-athletes viewed a 40-minute video depicting a relationship between a college-aged couple that had clear signs of verbal, emotional and physical abuse. After the video, the sophomores in attendance split into groups to participate in facilitated small-group discussions. Fellow student-athletes, athletic administrators, coaches, and university personnel served as facilitators.
"Team One Love at Louisville was proud to host another Escalation Workshop to help our student-athletes recognize the warning signs of unhealthy relationships,"Â said Associate Athletic Director for Student-Life and University of Louisville Athletics Title IX Coordinator, Christine Simatacolos. "We are committed to our partnership with the One Love Foundation and to continue to bring this education to our student-athletes and campus community."
