25 student-athletes volunteered during a field trip to the KFC Yum! Center
Last week, as part of the Women Sports Network's inaugural "Women in Sports Week" celebration, 510 girls from 11 local middle schools took a field trip to the KFC Yum! Center. Student-athletes from Louisville lacrosse, track & field, cheer, dance and women's basketball were accompanied by Bellarmine cross country, Spalding softball, volleyball and soccer student athletes, who together helped facilitate the morning group activities.
The morning was kicked off with an interactive C-A-R-D-S chant led by UofL student-athletes. After the student-athletes got the crowd up and moving, they tested the middle schoolers' sport trivia knowledge by giving them a small quiz to see who was up to date on current events. The schools then went into a school chant battle with the girls from Nativity Academy displaying the best school spirit and winning the contest.
Following the chant, four-time NCAA Champion, Olympic Swimming Gold Medalist and Cardinal Forever, Kelsi Worrell, took the floor discussing the importance balancing academics, athletics and your social life. She also talked about her time in Rio this past summer saying, "My favorite part of the Olympics in Rio was being able to cheer on my fellow teammates and watch them win gold in their events."
After Worrell finished, the girls flooded the floor, visiting various student-athlete stations. Student-athletes from the three universities answered questions and explained the importance of nutrition, healthy eating habits, and academics. The day ended with the girls having lunch with the student-athletes, getting autographs and taking group pictures. Â
Senior track and field sprinter, Taylor Bradley - a crowd favorite for the day - was all smiles after the event. "I had a very great time with each of the young ladies! It's awesome to be able to use my platform, as a student-athlete, to talk about the importance of education and being a mentor to the kids in the community. Being able to reach back out to the younger generation is far more tangible to me than just competing and winning a medal."
