315 Student-Athletes attend Inaugural Student-Athlete Social
This past week, 315 student-athletes entered the Speed Art Museum for the first ever Student-Athlete Social. The museum showcased the "Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture" exhibition.
The student-athletes dressed to impress while wearing their favorite pair of sneakers to complement the special sneaker exhibit theme. Many athletes raced to the dance floor at the silent disco where they spent majority of their time dancing with their special light-up headphones. They also had the opportunity to view the "Out of the Box" exhibit showcasing the progression of sneakers through the decades. Â Â Â
Â
The spirit squads were the first to attend and also the last to leave. "We loved the social!" said junior Co-Ed Cheerleader, Tyler Spelene. 'The silent disco was a major hit and the food was really good."
Junior lacrosse player, Julia Wood also loved the change of scenery and speaks on behalf of her team who are all excited for future events in the building. "I got great feedback from the team as well as my own personal thoughts for the event was that it was a complete success. I think the museum is such a cool place to be able to host gatherings and the food and interactive activities were amazing!" Â
Â
For many of the student-athletes, this was their first time inside the facility. In 2012, the Speed Art Museum closed its doors to start a $50 million expansion and renovation project. The museum reopened to the public in the spring of 2016. Special thanks goes to the Karp family who generously donated to both Athletics and the Speed Art Museum, making this cultural experience possible for Cardinal student-athletes.
Â
Campus & Community Relations Coordinator, Monica Negron, is excited for this new partnership and is looking forward to the upcoming projects between both groups. "The Speed Art Museum did an incredible job and we as an athletic department, are excited for future collaborations. Not only is the space a great asset for our student-athletes to come together, but it also gives them a new and unique platform to expand their community involvement."
Â
In October, the Speed Art Museum and CardsCARE, the community outreach program for UofL Athletics, will partner to host a service event for The West End School. The goal is to foster positive relationships using art as a means to provide personal growth.
Â
The Speed Art Museum is free to general public every Sunday from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. University of Louisville students, staff & faculty are granted free general admission everyday while presenting their IDs at the front desk. For more information about regular hours of operation, pricing, and its rotating exhibits, check out its site http://www.speedmuseum.org/
