Dee and Schmitt score goals, while Cleveland earns fourth shutout of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Behind goals from Geoffrey Dee and Tate Schmitt, the University of Louisville men's soccer team remained unbeaten at home with a 2-0 victory over Xavier on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The Cardinals scored two goals in a match for the fourth time this season while improving to 4-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 at Lynn Stadium. The home side also registered its fourth shutout of the season while limiting the Musketeers (2-2-2) to just four shots in the match.
"That's a good RPI win for us because Xavier is going to win a lot of games this year and they play in a tough conference in the Big East," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "This game was sandwiched between our first ACC game and Friday's home game against No. 1 Notre Dame and I thought our guys did a nice job of not allowing that to be a distraction. I was a little disappointed with how we started because we started a little slow, but as I told our guys at halftime, 'how awesome is it we really didn't play well and we're up 1-0 at the half.' I think we carried more energy into the second half and we were just more aggressive and more assertive."
Louisville broke through for the first goal of the night in the 39th minute when Dee, a junior transfer from Memphis, Tenn., connected for his first goal as a Cardinal. After taking a short cross from junior Tim Kubel, Dee finished inside the far left post from beyond the 18-yard box for the 1-0 lead and his eighth career collegiate goal. The assist for Kubel was his second of the season.
After taking the one goal advantage into halftime, the Cardinals added to their margin just 48 seconds into the second half when Schmitt, a sophomore from Phoenix, Ariz., gathered an errant pass by the Musketeers and scored inside the far right post for the 2-0 lead in the 46th minute. It marked the second goal of the season and the ninth career collegiate goal for Schmitt.
Graduate student Stefan Cleveland, who has played every minute in goal for the Cardinals this season, needed just two saves to clinch his fourth shutout of the season. The Dartmouth graduate has surrendered just two goals this season for a goals against average of 0.32. Louisville closed the night with a 9-4 edge in shots, including a 7-2 margin on-goal.
Up next, Louisville hosts No. 1 Notre Dame in an ACC showdown on Friday at 7 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
