Cards bow out 5-2
PITTSBURGH – The University of Louisville women's tennis team gave Pitt its first ever Atlantic Coast Conference victory on Friday afternoon as the Panthers defeated Louisville (6-2, 0-1 ACC) 5-2 at Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
Pitt (4-1, 1-1 ACC) locked up the doubles point with wins on No. 1 and 2.Abbie Pahz and Jessie Paul fell to the tandem of Audrey Ann Blakely and Gabriela Rezende 6-2 win at No. 2 which was followed by a 6-2 win by Amber Washington and Lolade Ogungbesan over Olivia Boesing and Sensa Suswam.
The Cardinals tied the dual after Gabriela Rezende fell 6-2, 6-2 to Ariana Rodriguez at No. 4 singles.
The Panthers then clinched the overall victory by securing wins on courts 1-3.
At No. 3 singles, Callie Frey dominated Ola Mally 6-2, 6-2 putting the lead back in Pitt's favor.
Audrey Ann Blakely followed with a win over Jessie Lynn Paul, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2.
Lolade Ogungbesan beat UofL's Sena Suswam at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-4 win.
The Cards travel to South Bend on Sunday to face No. 33 Notre Dame which is 4-3 to begin the season with the three losses on the season all coming against ranked opponents. The Fighting Irish knocked off the Cardinals in their meeting last year 4-3 at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center. Notre Dame will face off against Indiana at home on Saturday before they take on the Cardinals the following day.
Following this weekend's matchups, the Cardinals will be on the road again to challenge Wake Forest on Feb. 26 and Virginia on Feb. 28.
