Louisville Athletics Partners with the Project Life Movement

Cardinals register 330 new bone marrow donors
The University of Louisville's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was proud to partner with The Project Life Movement by hosting four bone marrow drives at different sporting events over the weekend. Men's basketball, football, women's basketball, and the new Thornton's Academic Center for Excellence were the gracious hosts for the successful drives which consisted of participant signing up to be on the bone marrow national registry.
Â
As part of the 2016-17 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) SAAC goals, many ACC institutions held and are planning to host drives on their campuses in order to create a conference wide cancer awareness initiative. Louisville's SAAC surpassed its goal of 300 new donors by reaching a school high of 330 new donors to the national registry. The mission of Project Life Movement is to expand the pool of potential bone marrow and stem cell donors. Focusing on college students enhances the diversity of the database. A simple cheek swab is all it takes to be entered in the registry and potentially save lives.
Â
Volleyball student-athlete and SAAC executive board member, Eleni Georgiafandis was a key player in the success of the drives. "These drives are crucial for patients desperately seeking a bone marrow match. November is the month to give thanks and give back. It was a very humbling experience," said Georgiafandis who also mentioned that the SAAC reps were all-hands-on-deck for these drives.
Â
"We are excited about our partnership with Project Life and cannot wait to continue this awesome tradition for SAAC in years to come," said Monica Negron, Campus & Community Relations Coordinator. "Louisville's SAAC was thrilled by the community's response and thankful to be a part of such an incredible movement."
