No. 8 Cardinals Extend Unbeaten Streak with 6-0 Win Over Belmont

Johnson and Hollkamp score one goal, add one assist each as Louisville’s unbeaten streak reaches seven
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior Daniel Johnson and freshman Grant Hollkamp finished with one goal and one assist each as the No. 8 Louisville men's soccer team remained unbeaten at home with a 6-0 victory against Belmont on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Five different players scored goals for the Cardinals (8-1-2), who extended their unbeaten streak to seven games overall, the longest stretch since a nine-game unbeaten streak in 2013. Along with second goals of the season for both Johnson and Hollkamp, Louisville also received goal-scoring contributions from junior Mohamed Thiaw, junior Jack Gayton and freshman Cherif Dieye.
Tuesday's performance marked the second time in the last three matches the Cardinals have scored six goals in match. Louisville finished the match with a 26-5 advantage in shots, including a 13-1 margin on-goal. It was the 10th time in 11 matches this season they have out-shot an opponent, while the 26 shots were a season-high.
The Cardinals, who registered their seventh shutout of the season, opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Thiaw was on the receiving end of a cross by Johnson and finished inside the right post from the center of the box for the 1-0 lead. The goal for Thiaw was his team-leading eighth of the season, while the assist for Johnson was his second of the season.
Louisville extended its lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute after Gayton connected for his second goal of the season scoring inside the left post from six yards out. Sophomore Tate Schmitt was credited with his second assist of the season after passing to Gayton at the top of the six-yard box.
Following halftime, the Cardinals extended their lead to 3-0 in the 56th minute when Johnson made a run up the left side and moved back to the center of the pitch before scoring from 18 yards away. It marked the second straight match with a goal for Johnson, who has seven career goals in two seasons with Louisville.
The margin increased to 4-0 in the 68th minute when Hollkamp received a cross from sophomore Ricardo Oliveros and scored inside the right post from eight yards away. It was the first of two assists in the match for Oliveros, who has three assists on the season.
Louisville's cushion moved to 5-0 in the 77th minute when Dieye connected for his second goal of season scoring inside the near right post from 10 yards away. Oliveros and Hollkamp was credited with the assists for the Cardinals, who added their final tally of the night in the 86th minute on an own goal by the Bruins.
Up next, No. 8 Louisville continues its three-match homestand with a visit from No. 3 Syracuse on Friday at 7 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
