Women's Golf Takes 10th at Mason Rudolph Championship
September 20, 2015 | Women's Golf
Freshman Olivia Cason led the Cardinals, tying for a fifth-place finish on the individual leaderboard.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Freshman Olivia Cason put the finishing touches on one of the best three-round scores of any freshman in school history, and the University of Louisville women's golf team wrapped up the Mason Rudolph Championship on Sunday with a 10th-place finish.
An Owensboro, Ky., native, Cason capped the final round with a 1-over-par 73, totaling a 4-under-par 212 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course. Since Friday, she totaled 14 birdies – fourth best in the 90-player field – and had the sixth-best average on par-5 holes (4.67).
Cason, who tied for fifth, registered the best three-round score at Louisville since current teammate Laura Restrepo and alumnae Katie Petrino each earned a 4-under-par 212 at the 2014 Central District Invitational.
"Olivia played great this week in a really strong field," head coach Courtney Trimble said. "She played like a veteran, and we know this is just the beginning of great things for both her and the team this year."
As a team, the Cardinals posted a 16-over-par 304 in the final round for a combined total of 20-over-par 884. Statistically, Louisville had the third-most pars (184) and finished third in average on par-3 holes (3.11).
Restrepo had the second-best combined score of the Cardinals, tying for 24th with a 2-over-par 218. The senior posted a 1-under-par on the back nine, but it wasn't enough to overcome a slow start in which she clubbed a 4-over-par through the first nine holes.
Classmate Katie Mitchell and freshman Lexie Long rounded out Louisville's scoring quartet. Mitchell, who finished 46th, ended the tournament with a 7-over-par 223, while Long's 16-over-par 232 put her at 75th on the individual leaderboard.
Louisville is idle next week and returns to action at the Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 9. The three-day tournament will be held at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
