Olivia Cason is tied for fourth through the first round after shooting a 3-under-par 69.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After opening the season paced by a senior, Louisville's youth took the early reins in the second tournament of the season.
Competing in their second collegiate event, freshmen Olivia Cason and Lexie Long put together stellar first-round performances, with each sitting in the top 10 and the University of Louisville women's golf team tied for sixth at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn.
Cason, an Owensboro, Ky., native, carded a 3-under-par 69 on Friday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course to tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard. She recorded four birdies, including three through her first seven holes, and owns a 2.40 average on par-3 holes, the best in the 90-player field.
Long wasn't far off the pace. The Dublin, Ohio, native fired a 2-under-par 70 behind 14 pars and three birdies, helping her to finish the day tied for ninth.
“Our freshmen did a great job today,” head coach Courtney Trimble said. “They really stepped up and got us off to a solid start. Laura (Restrepo) had a solid day as well.
“We like our position after day one and are right in the hunt with some great teams, so we're looking forward to another great day tomorrow.”
Senior Laura Restrepo battled back from a couple early bogeys to post a 1-over-par 73. Sophomore Molly Skapik rounded out the scorers with a 4-over-par 76.
As a team, Louisville led the 17-team field with 64 pars and ranked in the top five on par-3 and par-4 holes.
The second round begins on Saturday at 9:05 a.m. ET. Louisville, paired with Auburn and Virginia, begins competition at 9:55 a.m. Live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
