The University of Louisville field hockey team wrapped up preseason competition with a 7-1 win in the annual Alumnae Game Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
"The alumni coming back was a very competitive group," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "They had good numbers and they could play hockey. It was great to have excellent competition to help prepare us for next week."
A youthful and spirited group of former letterwinners and coaches took the field and the sidelines to help the current Cardinals in their final preseason tune up. The alumnae team featured more than 30 players including former all-Americans and several past all-region and all-conference selections.
The alumnae struck first with a goal from 2004 All-Mid-American Conference selection Suzanne Irwin Bush who slid a shot past freshman goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran at the 19:25 mark. The current Cardinals answered 10 minutes later when junior Shannon Sloss delivered back-to-back goals in a two-minute span to make the score 2-1 entering halftime.
The current Cards went on to score five unanswered goals in the second half. Just five minutes into the frame, senior Victoria Stratton notched the first of her two goals on a penalty corner to increase the lead to 3-1. Senior Katharine Gwynne-Wood sent a shot past Elina Pereira to make it a 4-1 game. Less than a minute later, Stratton struck again. Goals by freshman Tess Hannah and sophomore Stephanie Byrne in the final two minutes capped the scoring for the 7-1 final.
"We definitely came out a little flat and we didn't look like we did yesterday (against Iowa)," said Sowry. " There is work to be done. The second half was much better. We started to play a little bit more like our identity, but we're still young and when adversity hits -- whether it's the weather or the umpiring or that we're not playing well, we have to figure it out and still get the job done."
UofL will officially open the 2015 season on Aug. 28 when the Cards play host to Appalachian State at 6:30 p.m. Louisville will then face Indiana Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Trager Stadium. Admission is free.
