Eight different players score in 8-1 win over Mountaineers
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville got goals from eight different players in the 12th ranked Cardinals' season-opening 8-1 win over Appalachian State Friday evening at Trager Stadium.
"There were some really great things -- of course getting your first win on the board in a new season is always fantastic and to open on a gorgeous night here in Trager Stadium -- I'm happy," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "But when you look at the process throughout the game, there were a lot of things we're really disappointed in -- particularly after halftime we failed to reach the majority of our goals that we set. This is a young team and we're going to have to reiterate that for us to be successful, we're going to have to be disciplined... We have a long way to go, but we must stay humble and we have to remain hungry and continue to improve every day."
Louisville got first half goals from Lotta Kahlert, Victoria Stratton, Marigrace Ragsdale, Tess Hannah and Elisa Garcia as the Cards outshot the Mountaineers 16-0 and held an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Kahlert -- who finished the game with a goal and two assists - got the scoring started early when she fired off a shot from the top of the circle just 1:14 into the game. Stratton added to the lead with penalty corner assists from Nicole Woods and Katharine-Gwynne Wood at the 12:28 mark. Ragsdale gave the Cards a 3-0 lead when she tipped a pass from Kahlert. Three minutes later, Tess Hannah connected on penalty corner assists from Erin McCrudden and Kahlert. Soon after that, the Garcia made good on a penalty stroke to put the Cardinals up 5-0 going into the break.
The Cardinals' offense continued in the second half as Shannon Sloss, Erin McCrudden added their first goals of the season to make the score 7-0. Sloss delivered an unassisted goal at the 47:07 mark. McCrudden added her own unassisted goal to increase Louisville's lead to 8-0.
Appalachian State got on the scoreboard with less than 10 minutes left to play when Jordan Van Cleave fired off a penalty corner shot which glanced off the stick of a Louisville defender and into the cage to make it a 7-1 game.
With less than five minutes on the clock, Stephanie Byrne capped the scoring with an assist from Hailey Netherton with less than five minutes on the clock for the 8-1 final.
In the game, the Cardinals outshot the Mountaineers 27-2 while holding a 27-1 advantage in corners.
Louisville (1-0) will face Indiana (1-0) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Trager Stadium.Team Stats
