Five Softball Players Earn 2015 All-ACC Academic Honors

The University of Louisville placed five players on the 2015 All-ACC Academic Softball Team as announced by the conference office Tuesday. Maryssa Becker, Bridgette Flaherty, Kelsi Jones, Sidney Melton and Brittany Sims earned the honors for the Cardinals.
Louisville's five selections were the second most in the league behind Florida State's six representatives. To be eligible for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete much have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
Becker, a sophomore chemistry major from Medford, Ore., was an NFCA All-Southeast Region and All-ACC selection after leading the Cardinals in several categories. She led the pitching staff with a 14-9 record, 2.12 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 171.1 innings of work. She also posted six shutouts and was Louisville's first ACC Pitcher of the Week on April 14. Becker backed up her efforts in the circle with a .342 batting average and belted out a team-best nine home runs with 39 RBIs.
Flaherty, a pitcher from Woodstock, Ga., was sidelined by injury throughout most of the season, but made valuable contributions off the field during her freshman season.
Jones, a psychology major from Carmel, Ind., was also named to the 2015 Capital One Academic Softball All-District 2 first team. The ACC first team outfielder led the Cardinals with a .364 batting average, 37 runs, 17 doubles and 12 stolen bases during her senior year.
Melton (Columbus, Ohio), an exercise science major and infielder posted a .276 batting average and scored 10 runs in her freshman campaign.
Sims, a junior chemistry major from Lexington, Ky., was also a 2015 Capital One Academic Softball All-District 2 first team selection. The second baseman had a career-best season with five home runs, 27 runs, 15 RBIs and registered a .325 batting average.
The Cardinals finished the 2015 season with a 30-19 overall record after making their 12th consecutive NCAA regional appearance.
