Tennis Falls to No. 17 Miami

The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 17-ranked Miami Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

"Today's match was actually much better as far as the way we handled ourselves on the court," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "I have been upset with the team on their poor body language and negative self-talk. Today it didn't happen and we actually played better tennis but ran into a team that I consider to be of Sweet Sixteen or better caliber with Final Four capabilities. Miami is just very good."

The Cardinals, 11-15,dropped the doubles point when Sinead Lohan and Stephanie Wagner rolled 8-0 over Chloe Willetts and Ariana Rodriguez at No. 1 before the Canes won the No. 2 match 8-1.

The Cardinals' point came from senior Manuela Velasquez who dropped her first set 6-4 but won her second 6-4 and then outlasted Silivia Fuentes 10-8 in the tiebreaker. It was Velasquez' last home match and the senior was having so much trouble with an old arm injury that she had to serve underhand part of the match.

"Once again, Manuela Velaquez is the definition of what I want a UofL tennis player to be. She was in pain and she still found a way to get a win. She has had a great career here at UofL," said Beckham.

Miami took the No. 2 match from freshman Jessie Lynn Paul when UM's No. 11-ranked Stephanie Wagner, sister of Cardinal Albert Wagner, prevailed 6-0, 6-0. Next to fall was Elle Stokes at No. 1, when Miami's No. 32 ranked Sinead Lohan cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win. The clinching point came when Miami's No. 107-ranked Wendy Zhang won 6-0, 6-3 over Ariana Rodriguez.

No. 67 ranked Clementina Riobuena beat Cardinal Cassie Pough 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 right before No. 115-ranked Lina Lileikite won 6-1, 7-5 over UofL's Chloe Willetts.
