The University of Louisville women' tennis team fell 6-1 to visiting No. 1-ranked North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels improve to 17-0 in dual match play and 5-0 in ACC play, while the Cards drop to 10-9 on the season and 2-4 in ACC matches.
"I want to congratulate Manuela Velasquez. She has been a rock for us," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "It just shows what experience does for you. I didn't take for granted the fact that we played the No. 1 ranked team in the country. There is no guarantee that we will ever have that chance again. But I honestly feel that in the years to come, we are going to potentially be able to beat a team like this. Everyone on the team will have at least two or three more opportunities like this. I am definitely seeing improvement in our play."
North Carolina took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Jessie Lynn Paul and Manuela Velazquez fell 8-3 to the No. 18 pair of Hayley Carter and Whitney Key in No. 3 doubles before Elle Stokes and Ariana Rodriguez fell 8-3 to the No. 12 pair of Caroline Price and Jamie Loeb in the No. 1 spot.
The Tar Heels extended the lead to 2-0 when Jessie Lynn Paul fell 6-1, 6-0 to the No. 8 ranked player in the country Jamie Loeb in the No. 1 spot. Elle Stokes then fell 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 singles to No. 14 Hayley Carter before Chloe Willetts fell 6-3, 6-3 in the No 6 spot to Marika Akkerman, ranked No. 116 nationally. North Carolina built a 5-0 lead when Olivia Boesing fell 6-3, 6-3 to No. 125 Kate Vialle in No. 5 singles. Manuela Velazquez put the Cards on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 61 Whitney Kay in the No. 4 spot. Ariana Rodriguez then lost 7-6, 6-1 in No. 3 singles to No. 16 Caroline Price to make the final score 6-1.
"We will take a bit of a break to train for a week and then finish out the rests of the regular season very strongly," said Beckham.
The Cards will take a week off before traveling to Syracuse, N.Y. to face the Orange on Friday, March 27.
