Tennis Falls to Wake Forest

The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 63 Wake Forest on Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

With the win, the Demon Deacons improve to 10-6 on the season and 1-4 in the ACC, while Louisville falls to 10-9 and 2-4 in the conference.

"Obviously we are in a frustrating patch right now," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "This team doesn't kjnow how to manage their matches yet. And when we are playing against teams just as good as us talent-wise, we have to be good at something other than just hitting the tennis ball. This team has gone through quitet a bit but is still in the early stage of becoming really good college tennis players. They will get it, but we will have to go through some growing pains."

The Demon Deacons clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Chloe Willets and Olivia Boesing fell 8-3 in No. 2 doubles to start the match, but the No. 1 pair of Elle Stokes and Ariana Rodriguez won 8-3 to bring the Cards back into contention for the point. Jessie Lynn Paul and Manuela Velazquez then fell in No. 3 doubles to give Wake Forest a 1-0 lead.

The Demon Deacons took a 2-0 lead when Elle Stokes fell 6-3, 6-2 to Kimmy Guerin in No. 1 singles. Olivia Boesing then fell 7-5, 6-2 to Kasey Gardiner in the No. 5 spot before Jessie Lynn Paul fell 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 singles to Xue Zhang to make the score 4-0. Samantha Asch took down Ariana Rodriguez 6-3, 6-2 in No. 3 singles to put Wake Forest up 5-0. Manuela Velazquez put the Cards on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win in No. 4 singles over Luisa Fernandez before Chloe Willetts lost 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 in the No. 6 spot to Karen Forman.

The Cards return to action on Sunday at 11 a.m. when they host No. 1 North Carolina at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
