Women's Tennis Falls to No. 26 Notre Dame

The No. 74 University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 26 Notre Dame in ACC action on Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

"This was a completely different match than last weekend. Today I felt we played good tennis and put in ourselves in a position to win the match," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "Obviously in a 4-3 match, the smallest thing can make the difference whether we win or lose. Our issue is a lack of experience. We have not been through the grind of playing these elite level teams every match. We showed today that we are capable of winning matches like these. So my freshmen and sophomores have to mature a bit and then turn matches like this around."

Chloe Willetts and Olivia Boesing won 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles spot, but the Irish came back to clinch the doubles point, winning 8-6 in No. 1 and 8-4 in No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Manuela Velasquez fell 6-1, 6-4 to Notre Dame's Allison Miller in No. 4 singles. The Irish earned another point to go up 3-0 when Mary Closs took down Louisville's Ariana Rodriguez 6-3, 6-2 in No. 3 singles. Jessie Lynn Paul defeated Julie Vrabel 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) in the No. 2 spot to put the Cards on the board, and Willetts earned another point when she defeated Molly O'Koniewski 6-4, 6-4 in No. 65 singles. Elle Stokes fell 7-5, 6-4 in No. 1 singles to Monica Robinson, but Boesing managed to earn a third point for the Cards, defeating Jane Fennelly 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 10-8 in No. 5 singles.

The Cards, 9-4, return to action on Sunday, Feb. 22 when they host North Texas at 2 p.m.
