The University of Louisville women's tennis team took the doubles point but could not hold off Marshall in singles, falling 5-2 in Huntington, W.V. late Friday night.

"Very disappointed in the loss but we gave an amazing effort," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "I wasn't sure early in the week if we were going to have enough players to play, injury and illness has hit us pretty hard. They learned a lot today about themselves, they were doing things they didn't think they could do. Marshall is a very well coached team and has a lot of good players and we pushed them pretty hard. They were just too good at the big moments."

Chloe Willetts and Olivia Boesing struck first at No. 2 doubles with an 8-6 win over Rachael Morales and Maddie Silver. Elle Stokes and Ariana Rodriguez beat Marshall's Derya Turhan and Anna Pomyantinskaya 8-5 at No. 1 to clinch the point.

Singles play featured three hours of competition before Marshall pulled away. Kai Broomfield won (6-3, 6-2 )at No. 5 for the first singles point. Freshman Maddie Silver beat Jessie Lynn Paul at No. 2 and then Anna Pomyatinskaya soon followed suit at No. 3 with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Ariana Rodriguez.

Manuela Velasquez beat Marija Bogicevic at the No. 4 singles spot (4-6, 6-2, 6-2), giving Louisville its second point and making the score 3-2.

The Herd clinched the match when sophomore Derya Turhan pulled out a three set marathon match (5-7, 7-6 (9), 6-4) at No. 1 after battling back from one set down and fighting off two match points to down Elle Stokes

Sophomore Rachael Morales gave Marshall its fifth point when Chloe Willetts fell at the No. 6 spot (6-2, 7-6(6).
