Cardinals Set to Close Fall at Rivanna Romp
November 13, 2015 | Rowing
Louisville slated to have three varsity eight crews, 5-6 varsity four boats and one freshman eight
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The fall racing season for the Louisville rowing team will conclude Sunday with the University of Virginia's Rivanna Romp on the Rivanna Reservoir in Earlysville, Va.
Action is slated to begin at 10 a.m., ET with the varsity eight boats continue through the morning. The Cardinals will be competing against the host Cavaliers as well as Clemson, Columbia, Duke, Navy and Pennsylvania.
"This is our biggest race of the fall because it's a great indicator of the progress of our team going into the winter," said Louisville head coach Derek Copeland. "There are more well-known races during the fall, but it's a great test for our athletes and an event we've been competing in for four years."
Louisville will have three varsity eight crews racing at the Rivanna Romp as well as 5-6 varsity four boats and a freshman eight crew. The Cardinals will arrive in Virginia on Friday and will scrimmage against the host Cavaliers with a series race pieces ranging from 500 to 1000 meters during the afternoon. Louisville will also practice on Saturday before Sunday's racing competition.
"The scrimmage races against Virginia are great for us because they're a consistently good program with great depth. We've worked aggressively for a few years now on improving our depth and it's good to measure our progress against them," explained Copeland. "It's also really useful to see the race course and race on it before Sunday's event."
Following Sunday's event in Virginia, Louisville will return home and conclude the fall semester with limited time on the water. The Cardinals will conduct their annual winter training trip in December, while the spring racing season will officially begin on March 12-13 with the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational in Tennessee.
