LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Facing arguably the best competition it has seen all season, the Cardinals shot one of their best rounds of the season.
The University of Louisville women's golf team, in a field of 13 of the nation's top 50 programs, compiled a 4-over-par 2 on Friday and is tied for third at the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Cardinals led the pack with 63 pars, while combining for 10 birdies.
Molly Skapik paced the Cardinals with the best round of her young career, firing a 2-under-par 70 at the UNC Finley Golf Course. The sophomore finished the first nine holes 1-under-par after a birdie on No. 2 and then concluded the day with consecutive birdies on Nos. 17 and 18, putting her in a tie for third on the leaderboard.
Freshman Lexie Long bolstered the team's score, recording a 1-over-par 73 to sit in a tie for 13th. After bogeying her first hole of the day, she came back with consecutive pars followed by a birdie. She hit her second bogey of the day on No. 5, but finished the front nine with two more birdies and two pars.
Seniors Katie Mitchell and Laura Restrepo rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals, shooting a 2-over-par 74 and 3-over-par 75, respectively. Both earned a 1-over-par on the front nine, but Mitchell was able to strike a couple of birdies before the end of the day and move into a tie for 28th.
Louisville returns to action on Saturday for the second of the three-day event, teeing off at 9:54 a.m. with Michigan State and North Carolina.
