Cards register sixth shutout of the season
COLUMBUS, Ohio- Junior Lotta Kahlert's first-half goal lifted the No. 11 University of Louisville field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Ohio State Sunday afternoon. Louisville improves to 8-5 on the season while Ohio State drops to 7-5.
"Another tough opponent gave us some challenges today," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We are improving in these games. We had great awareness and stayed disciplined defensively and we showed more poise in possession of the ball. I am very proud that we came out with a positive result against a very good team."
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the 10th minute of the game after earning a penalty corner. Senior Victoria Stratton's initial shot was stopped by Ohio State goalkeeper Liz Tamburro and junior Lotta Kahlert was there to send the rebound into the cage. Her second goal of the season gave Louisville a 1-0 lead.
The Cards took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Buckeyes 8-3 and holding a 5-1 edge in penalty corners. UofL freshman goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran collected three saves while Ohio State's Liz Tamburro also had three stops.
Louisville continued to apply offensive pressure in the second half, firing off four shots, three of which were stopped by Ohio State Tamburro who finished the game with six saves. In the second half, the Cardinals outshot the Buckeyes 4-1 and held a 3-0 corner advantage.
McFerran (8-5) had three saves en route to her sixth shutout of the season. In the game, Louisville outshot Ohio State 12-4 and had an 8-1 edge in shots.
The Cardinals (8-5) return to action next weekend when they wrap up ACC play Friday at No. 10 Boston College and then face Northeastern Sunday.
