Women's Tennis Blanks Furman at ITA Kickoff Weekend

The University of Louisville women's tennis team won the doubles point and then rolled in singles to post a 4-0 win over Furman at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Durham, N.C. Sunday morning.

"We had a very good effort this morning," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "The pressure of college tennis is new for a lot of the players who played to day and this was a pretty intense match. So for us to close out the matches the way we did was very good to see. I am not certain how good we can be but we have a high ceiling and matches like yesterday's with Duke and today's with Furman will do nothing but help us improve."

In doubles, the No. 2 pair of Chloe Willetts and Olivia Boesing beat Harper Casell and Blair Martin 6-1. The No. 1 pair of Ariana Rodriguez and Manuela Velasquez fell 6-1 to Alex Moreno-Kaste and Ansley Speaks 6-1. The No. 3 duo of Elle Stokes and Ellie Gerlach clinched the point with a hard-fought 6-4 win over Karlee Bryde and Joan van Lochem.

In singles, the first point was scored when Manuela Velasquez rolled 6-0, 6-4 over Blair Martin at No. 3. The Cards scored again when Jessie Lynn Paul beat Karlee Bryde 6-4, 6-1. The deciding point came from Chloe Willetts 6-2, 6-4 win over Joan van Lochem at No. 6.

The Cardinals return to action Feb. 1 when they take on Xavier and Northern Kentucky at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. respectively at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center.
