Women's Tennis Rocks Southern Illinois in Season Opener
January 17, 2015 | Women's Tennis
The University of Louisville women's tennis team swept both doubles and singles to win their first dual match of the 2015 season with a 7-0 win over Southern Illinois Saturday morning at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"The win felt good but we showed some nerves today which is typical, especially with nine freshman or sophomores on the roster. I just have to remember they are 18 and 19 years old and highly nervous although playing through it helps and we will work on changing that," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham.
Ola Mally and Manuela Velasquez struck first with a 6-1 win at No. 2, beating Polina Dozortseva and Vitoria Beirao. The No. 1 singles pair of Elle Stokes and Ariana Rodriguez clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Meagan Monaghan and Natasha Tomishima. Olivia Boesing and Jessie Lynn Paul completed the sweep with a 6-3 sweep at No. 3.
In singles, No. 6 Chloe Willetts made short work of Gisela Baza with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Olivia Boesing made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Yana Golovkina. The match's clinching point came from Manuela Velasquez at No. 4 when she rolled 6-1, 6-4 over Ariadna Baza.
