Women's Tennis Showcases Newcomers at Irish Invitational

The University of Louisville women's tennis team went 5-3 in both doubles and singles at the University of Notre Dame Invitational at the Courtney Tennis Center in South Bend, Ind.

"We've had a solid two days here," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "Our doubles picked up today. We were much more aggressive today. This is the first event of the year for three of the four girls here, so I think we are performing well against very good competition."

The Cards went 2-2 on the first day of singles with Ellie Gerlach and Aleksandra Mally picking up wins. UofL was 2-2 in doubles that day with Ellie Gerlach and Elle Stokes battling Meredith Maltby and Vanessa Nommensen of Tulane to an 8-6 win. Olivia Boesing and Aleksandra Mally beat Sophie Geier and Shannon Newnes of Akron 8-1.

The Cards went 3-1 in singles on Saturday with Elle Stokes picking up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Notre Dame's Jane Fennelly. Olivia Boesing beat Tulane's Kayla Klier 6-3, 6-3 and Ellie Gerlach rolled 6-3, 6-2 over Zoe Gaber of Tulane.

UofL was also 3-1 in doubles started by an 8-6 win by Olivia Boesing and Aleksandra Mally, who beat Mary Closs and Jane Fennelly of Notre Dame. U of L also got wins from Elle Stokes and Ellie Gerlach (8-1).
