No. 21 Louisville 21, Virginia 23
September 13, 2014
Charlottesville, Va. - David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium
- Louisville's game captains against Virginia were Lorenzo Mauldin, Jake Smith, Sheldon Rankins, and Will Gardner.
- It was the first meeting between the two schools since 1989, with the Cavaliers taking a 2-1 series advantage with the win.
- The Cardinals had their eight-game winning streak snapped, which was the second-longest in the nation.
- The loss snapped a six-game Louisville winning streak on the road and was the first loss for the Cardinals since Nov. 10, 2012, when they fell 46-25 to Syracuse.
- Wide receiver Michaelee Harris made his first start at wide receiver for the Cardinals.
- Guard John Miller and tackle Jamon Brown each made their 22nd-consecutive starts on the offensive line. Linebacker James Burgess and safety Terell Floyd each made their 19th-straight starts on defense.
- Charles Standberry caught his second career touchdown pass on his just his third reception on the Cardinals' opening drive.
- The Cardinals opened the game with a nine-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a nine-yard pass from Will Gardner to Charles Standberry. It was the first time the Cardinals scored on the opening drive this season. They had gone 3-and-out in the first two games.
- Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins recovered his first career fumble on a backwards pass in the first quarter.
- James Quick totaled a career-high five catches for 34 yards. He caught a four-yard touchdown pass with 6:59 to play to put Cardinals ahead 21-20. It was his first career receiving touchdown.
- Safety Gerod Holliman recorded his team-leading third interception of the season - also third of his career - after logging two interceptions in the game. Holliman is the first Cardinal to record a pair of picks since Terell Floyd had two last year in a 31-10 win over Connecticut.
- Linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin had five tackles in the game, including his 15th-career sack.
- Linebacker Keith Kelsey totaled a career-best 11 tackles with a sack and pass breakup.
