Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams are set to open the 2014 season on Saturday, Aug. 30 when they travel to compete in the Flyer 5K in Dayton, Ohio.
Both races will take place at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering on Saturday morning, with the men's race set to begin at 10:45 a.m. and the women's race following at 11:15 a.m. The Cardinals will compete against host University of Dayton and six other NCAA Division I programs: Capital, Cleveland State, Miami (OH), Northern Kentucky, Ohio State and Wright State. Division III Programs Denison and Wittenberg will also be participating.
Both Louisville squads experienced impressive 2013 seasons. The men's team posted a first-place finish at the AAC Championships, with the women finishing in second behind SMU.
The 2014 men's squad, which is tied for eighth in the 2014 ACC preseason coaches' poll, features nine returnees, including junior Ernest Kibet, who secured all-conference and all-region honors, and junior Edwin Kibichiy, who was an outdoor track standout for the Cardinals during the 2014 spring season. The women's squad, ranked 11th in the ACC preseason coaches' poll, returns 12 runners, including sophomore Benadate Cheruiyot, who finished in fifth place at the 2013 AAC Championships behind the third-fastest time in school history. Sophomores Agnes Chepchumba and Adair Gennocro and senior Michelle Molodynia also helped the Cardinals to a second-place finish and were named to the all-conference team along with Cheruiyot.
