Louisville Head Coach Jeff Walz
(On outscoring Lafayette 33-2 in points off turnovers)
“I thought we did a really nice job of trying to create as many scoring opportunities off of turnovers as we could and it worked out well for us. I was really pleased with how well we took care of the basketball. That's something as I've said over and over, we're going to have to continue to do that because we aren't a great 3-point shooting team. You have to make sure you get as many field goal attempts as you can and I thought we did a really nice job tonight.”
(On what changed on defense after getting off to a little bit of a slow start)
“They shoot the ball well and we knew that. What we tried to do in the first four or five minutes was extend our press, trap earlier, and try to cause a little more chaos out there and I thought we did a really good job of that. Once we got them into a situation where they were chasing instead of making us chase, I thought it really threw them off some with their outside shooting.”
(On Jude Schimmel's performance)
“I was happy for Jude. She's been working very hard. Do I expect her to go 4 for 5 from the 3 every night? No. For us right now, if we could get 2 for 5 from our shooters, I'd be thrilled. Anything in that area - 2 for 6 - I'd be thrilled. What we have to do is try to find two or three of our guards who can make one or two 3-pointers a game - so we aren't relying on six from Mariya Moore one night or four from Jude one night. If we can get two from Mariya, two from Jude, two from Sara (Hammond) because Sara's a very good 3-point shooter - then it just opens things up because people respect your inside-outside game.
(Update on Cortnee Walton's status)
“She's actually wearing a shoe right now, which is good. She's out of a walking boot. She's been doing some running on a machine that can dictate how much body weight she's actually putting on that foot. It's just a slow progression right now. I'm not sure if it's going to be a week or three or four days, or what it's going to be. But when she starts to come back, it's going to be a slow progress to see how the pain is and hopefully we can get her back in at least two weeks.”
(On the last time UofL had seven players in double figures in a game)
“I'm not sure. If we could make some layups ... Sheronne Vails was working hard out there. If she makes two more layups, we have eight. It's one of those things that we keep working with: free throws and layups are going to be the death of us.”
Jude Schimmel, Sr., Guard
(On if her shooting slump is over)
“Yeah, I guess you could say that. I couldn't really figure out what was wrong with my shot, but for the last week or so, everybody's been telling me it's short. Coach (Jeff) Walz said it's up to me if I want to make that change, and I've been aiming long for the back of the rim and I guess it's finally going in.”
(On if it was the defense or she was just feeling good about her shot in practice)
“I think it's just a confidence thing. I think that's been one of my issues for the last three years where I haven't been really confident in myself. Especially in the first few games this year I wasn't shooting the ball very well and that didn't help, but my teammates and my coaches just say, 'Make an adjustment and it will start falling,' and it did.”
(On the change from the beginning of the game when the defense was slow)
“I just think it comes with maturity. We were playing Lafayette, but we know as a team that we're not preparing for games like this, we're preparing for later on in the season when we play bigger, better teams. I think we just take it as a learning experience and know that we have to be ready from the start and play 40 minutes to the best of our ability.”
(On the 14-0 run in the first half)
“I think it was very apparent to all of us that we had a really slow start. We don't think it should have been that close to begin with, and I feel like we just stepped it up on defense and people like Mariya (Moore) started finding the open person, and it all just started getting better after we picked it up.”
(On if there was a defensive adjustment in the game)
“The biggest thing was stop fouling. I think it took us a while, it took us to the second half to stop fouling. But I think that's our biggest issue right now, we need to be able to play defense. I think that we pressure really well, but I think we just need to stop fouling and stop putting them on the line, and that's what we did in the second half.”
Mariya Moore, Fr., Forward
(On her assists in the game and sharing the ball)
“My shot wasn't really falling, so I felt like it wasn't about me. My shots aren't falling and I know my teammates will be there, so I just want to drive and see if I can get them good shots.”
