Louisville Head Coach Jeff Walz
(On 3-point shooting)
“(Jill) Morrison for them shoots it extremely well. Mariya (Moore), she's got the potential to shoot it like that. She made big shots for us. She was without a doubt our best offensive player throughout the entire game and we're very fortunate that she showed up to play tonight.”
(Did you expect Mariya Moore to play so well so early as a freshman)
“Yes, that's why we recruited her. I've got to get more out of Myisha (Hines-Allen) effort-wise. Her effort was not very good today. If you look at her stat line, you'd probably think she needed to play more minutes. She was 5 for 6, 4 for 9 at the free throw line, but in reality, she's 4 for 11, because she got two free ones when the girl stepped in the lane. But she had been our best free throw shooter up until this game. In that situation she has to make free throws. But then she goes 0 for 3 and turns the ball over three times. The telltale sign was she didn't guard anybody. She didn't sprint up and down the floor to help us defensively. So I've got to show her film so she can see that. Myisha and Mariya were two McDonald's All-Americans that we knew we were going to need to come in here and play significant minutes as freshmen.”
(On whether he was happy about forcing 34 turnovers)
“Yes we are, but at the same time, it's a crazy stat sheet if you look at it. We took 35 more shots, we made one more three, attempted six more free throws, had 22 offensive boards and still it's a five point game with six minutes to go, because we can't make a free throw. It's going to come back to bite you in the butt. The good thing about it is I know they can do it, because it's the same group that just shot 80 percent the other night. We're just going to have to continue to work on it. The other stat that we have to get better at is you can't get 22 offensive rebounds and get 17 points. It does no good to just throw it up - miss, throw it up - miss, throw it up and the other team gets it. I know it looks great you have three offensive boards, but if you don't get anything out of it, it does you no good. We definitely have to work on that.
(On Emmonnie Henderson's play)
“She had about a four-minute stretch where I thought she looked really, really good. The problem is she didn't show up at the beginning. When I put her out there, she was a no-factor. Then in the second half, about five or six minutes in, she goes in for Sara Hammond and then no communication, because she probably wasn't paying attention. She's supposed to take the ball out of bounds. They score, she runs straight down the court, so I took her back out. It's things I try to tell them... I'm not going to yell at you and scream at you. If you don't do your job, I've got to get you out. When I put her back in for that last four-minute stretch, I thought she did some great things.”
(Is it good to have a grind-it-out game like that?)
“No, I hate it. I'd rather win by 30 every night. I think what it does is it really shows you areas that you have to work on. We really got exposed in some areas... our free throw shooting obviously is a bad one. We didn't do a very good job of communicating at times on some simple back screens that turned into layups for them. There are things that we are going to be able to sit down and show them tomorrow but we've got a quick turnaround for a game on Tuesday against a very good Western Kentucky team that if we perform like we did today, we're going to get beat.
(On allowing Ball State to score in the paint especially early in the game)
“I would think anybody that we're going to play would be excited to see that. We allowed them to shoot 56 percent from the field. They were 18 for 32, so if they hadn't turned it over 34 times... they had more turnovers than they had field goal attempts. I thought when they got in the half court and actually got what they wanted, they did a great job of executing. Those are things that we're going to have to break down and show them. You can't be leaving shooters, you have to know where you are on the floor at all times.”
Myisha Hines-Allen, Fr., F.
(On Louisville's ability to score tonight)
"We had to look for the open spots, and that's really what we had to capitalize on. Going up strong and pulling down rebounds too, and going back up. If our guards missed, we had to pick it up for them."
(On playing well during the first few games of the season)
"Thank you. Today I didn't get off to a great start, but my teammates help me find the open spots, so that's what really helps get me going. My teammates."
(On she and Mariya Moore, both freshmen, grabbing double figures tonight)
"We just worked really hard, so that's all that shows."
Shawnta' Dyer, R-Sr., F.
(On the closeness of the score with 14 minutes left in the game)
"What we were thinking is that we really have to change the momentum. We have to get the ball back in our court. When [Ball State's] coach got a technical foul, we had to take that and we had to run with it because they were already flustered. They were frustrated, so we had to take that and actually do what we do best and continue to do what we do well."
(On Louisville's ability to stop Ball State's effort inside the paint later in the second half)
"I think we actually focused and we actually understood what we needed to do to stop them. We kept letting them shoot open 3s and we kept fouling them. We kept getting them to the free throw line, and they're awesome free throw shooters. I think that's one of the things we have to work on. Stop fouling."
(On whether or not Ball State is the most physical team Louisville has faced so far this season)
"I wouldn't say the most physical, but it is frustrating to have that many people sucked in the paint. Mariya (Moore) really stepped up for us (with) the outside shot. [She] got them to step out a little bit to clear it out for us, so that was good ... she was hot. We had to get it to her."
(On tonight's game as preparation for Western Kentucky on Tuesday)
"We have to know that we're preparing for someone who has seen this program, Michelle Clark-Heard. We have to actually go at them. We have to take this game and actually learn from it. They have good post players. They have a good outside guard game. We just can't foul. We can't send them to the free throw line because that's where they get all of their points."
(On Louisville's defensive pressure tonight, forcing 34 turnovers and capturing 15 steals)
"I think it's amazing, but it's how well we convert those turnovers. We have to take those turnovers and we have to score. If we're not scoring from those turnovers, then it's kind of not in our favor."
