Two teammates from the University of Louisville women's swimming and diving squad received nominations to compete in competitions during the summer months of 2015. USA Swimming today announced Olympian-laden United States rosters for a trio of major international competitions in 2015 - the FINA World Championships, Pan American Games and World University Games.
Junior Kelsi Worrell was named to the US National Team at the 2015 Pan American Games. She is coming off a record season last year when she posted a school record with a second place finish in the 100 butterfly at the 2014 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. She finished with a time of 51.09. During her preliminaries, Worrell posted a time of 50.95 which ranked eighth in the fastest NCAA time in history.
"This is a great honor for Kelsi, and also a great reflection on our program. Thank you for your continued support," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. The Pan American Games will be held in Toronto in July of 2015 with competitions starting on the 14th and going through the 18th of July. Kelsi will be one of the 36 pool athletes on a roster that includes a star-studded group featuring more than 20 National Team members, 10 Olympians and six Olympic gold medalists
Highlighting the group is Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.), a three-time Olympian and 12-time Olympic medalist. She will be joined in Toronto by fellow U.S. Olympic gold medalists Cullen Jones (Irvington, N.J.), Matt McLean (Sterling, Va.), Allison Schmitt (Canton, Mich.) and Nick Thoman (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Sophomore Andrea Cottrell was selected to represent the Cardinals at the 2015 World University Games.
"This is a special moment for our program," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. A 2014 All-AAC selection, Cottrell was invited to the 2014 NCAA Championships in the 100 and 200 breast. Cottrell posted a third place finish in the 200 breast with a NCAA Invite time of 2:10:81.
The 2015 World University Games take place in Gwangju City, South Korea from July 3rd to July 14th.
Cottrell will be one of the 550 athletes that will represent the US in 21 sports. Headlining the 46 swimmers named to Team USA for the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea, will be 2012 Olympians Rachel Bootsma (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Lia Neal (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Shannon Vreeland (Overland Park, Kan.). They lead a contingent of 30 USA Swimming National Team members.
