LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville student-athletes continue to achieve academically at a high level, success which is reflected in recent national graduation rates released by the NCAA.
U of L student-athletes achieved an 80 percent graduation rate in the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) Report, which was developed 11 years ago to account for transfers into the university who graduate and those who leave in good academic standing. The Cardinals' GSR, most recently reported for freshmen and transfers who entered 2004-05 through the 2007-08 academic year, has risen 14 percent since the reporting began 10 years ago. Seven sports -- women's golf, women's lacrosse, women's rowing, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming and men's tennis -- attained a GSR at 90 percent or above in the most recent report.
Over the last 11 years, graduation rates for U of L student-athletes have risen 17 percent, improving from 48 percent for the freshman class which entered U of L in 1997-98 to a 65 percent graduation rate in the most recent 2007-08 figures. U of L student-athletes graduate at a 10 percent higher rate than the overall university student population in the 2004-05 through 2007-08 four-class average.
"Our student-athletes have made good strides forward," said Tom Jurich, U of L Vice-President and Director of Athletics. "Our coaches are committed to recruiting impressive student-athletes and our support staff is passionate about helping them attain their academic goals. We want to continue improving and providing opportunities to generate more academic success stories among our student-athletes."
All UofL student-athletes combined to produce an average grade point average of 3.0 or better for each of the last six straight semesters. A record of 371 student-athletes achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA in the fall 2013 semester. UofL's men's basketball and women's golf teams were among the top 10 percent in their respective sports in the latest academic progress rate (APR), which measures academic eligibility, retention, and graduation for student-athletes. Both sports programs have a perfect 1000 score for the most recent four-year period from 2009-13. Nine sports had perfect APR scores for the most recent 2012-13 rates.
