INDIANAPOLIS - Led by Mattias Wolter's victory in the steeplechase, the University of Louisville track and field teams earned a combined five top-10 finishes in two meets late Friday night.
Wolter's career-best time of 8:43.73, likely to be a top-10 national mark, delivered the junior his first victory of the season in the event. He finished two seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Michelle Kinsella finished runner-up in her season debut in the high jump. The Whitby, Ontario, native cleared 1.85m/6-0.75 on her first attempt, an outdoor height that ranks third best in school history. She passed on 1.88m/6-2 and was unsuccessful at the next height (1.91m/6-3.25).
In Louisville's last event of the day, Ernest Kibet raced to seventh-place showing in the 10,000m. His time of 28:55.55 ranks second in school history in the event, only behind Michael Eaton's 28:41.96 that was set in 2008.
At the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, Tyler Byrne and Japhet Kipkoech each posted sub-30 minute 10,000m marks en route to a pair of top-10 finishes. Byrne took second after clocking 29:47.14, while Kipkoech was sixth behind a time of 29:53.01. Both marks are good enough for the top-10 nationally.
