The University of Louisville women's tennis team won the doubles point with an upset win over a top 40 pair and then won five of six singles to post a 6-1 win over Southern Illinois Saturday morning at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

"This was a very solid performance," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "I am liking what I see from this team. I have been doing it long enough to tell when a team has a chance to be pretty good. This team definitely has a chance to be exactly that. We need to keep improving every match so we can build a nice winning streak."

The Cards (3-0) swept the doubles point to start the match. First to finish was the No. 1 doubles pair of Manuela Velasquez and Julia Fellerhoff, who upset #36-ranked Melanie Delsart and Anastacia Simons 8-3. The doubles point was clinched by the No. 2 duo of Rebecca Shine and Rebecca Bodine with an 8-2 win over Anita Lee and Korey Love. With all eys upon them, Mandy Brown and Stefanie Villajuan held on to win 8-5 after being tied at five to complete the sweep of SIU (0-1).

Rebecca Shine notched the first singles point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Anita Lee. Mandy Brown finished next with a 6-2, 6-0 sweep of Ariadna Cairo Baza at No. 4. Freshman Lauren Harrington took No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory to clinch the match. At No. 3, Manuela Velasquez rolled 6-0, 6-4 over Natasha Tomishima. Julia Fellerhoff won at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-1 comeback win. At No. 5 singles, Becky Bodine won her first set 6-1, fell 6-3 in the second and then dropped the tiebreaker 10-6.

The Cards take on Miami (OH) today at 4 p.m. with free t-shirts and pizza available to the first 50 fans in the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
